Strategy Of The Month
Upstate_Grl is our first
monthly winner in our Euchre Strategy Contest! She won 1000 league bux
and earned her way to the 'Hall Of Fame' at the Euchre Club
website www.euchreclub.com/halloffame.html.
Her strategy and future winners strategies will be read by over 10,000
people every month! I don't think she will ever have a problem
finding a partner at pogo.com! Congratulations Upstate_Grl on your
excellent achievement!
Choosing Your Lead
By Upstate_grl, member of Euchre Freaks league.
Good players don't randomly select cards. Many
players know that when their partner "throws off", that it is a good idea to lead
back the suit they threw off. For example, I lead the ace of spades, my partner has
no spades but doesn't want to trump my ace so throws a "diamond". On my next
lead (assuming ace was good) I will often lead a diamond hoping my partner short
suited themselves and can trump it (as they should have).
There is a very
important exception that is OFTEN overlooked. If my partner was the dealer and
he picked up trump then he most likely already short suited himself. Therefore
when my partner now "throws off", he is likely throwing a suit he has 2 of since
he already discarded the suit he had only one of. So in the situation above, if
my ace was good and my partner threw off, I would NOT lead the suit they just
threw. I would pick the other suit. (Not trump, Not the suit I just led, and Not
the suit my p "threw off").
Conversely, you should lead the thrown off" suit if
the opponent who just picked up trump is the one "throwing off".
Example,
opponent to my left leads off ace, my p follows suit, dealer (who picked up
trump) throws off, I trump the ace. I then lead the suit the dealer just threw
off assuming that they already short suited themselves and the suit they just
threw is a suit they have 2 of. (I am hoping my p can trump this trick and
dealer will have to follow suit) Remember, this exception ONLY applies when the
dealer picks up trump and is able to discard. Any other time (or any other
player), you assume the person is short suiting themselves and play accordingly.

Sometimes it is not 'What You Have', it's 'How You Play It'. By Joe
Andrews, Author of the monthly Euchre Column at
The Zone
An interesting hand from the 2000 National Collegiate Championships, which were held in Orlando, FL. The score was tied at 9-9 in a ten point Match. The up card was the Jack of Spades. West held a powerful hand, and told South to pick up the Right Bower. South discarded the Club ten in order to do so. This was the position prior to the opening lead. |

|
He had a "warm and fuzzy" feeling, and made a comment about "going to the
Show." West was on lead. This was the semi-final table, and the winning team
would advance to the final round, where $40,000 in Scholarship Prizes was at
stake!
The West player opened with the Ace of Hearts, as North and East
followed, and South trumped with the Queen. South thought for three seconds,
and reached for the master trump. The Right Bower was then played, as West
dropped the Ten, North let go of his lonely Nine, and East tossed the Heart
Ten. The walls of South's castle now shook, and came tumbling down! Now he
exited with the Ace of Clubs and waited for his game fulfilling trick. As of
this writing, he is still waiting! (The North and East hands were immaterial
at this point). West gleefully trumped with the King, and the Left Bower
dropped South's Spade Ace. The King of Hearts brought the game home, as the
two points put East and West over the top. Did you spot South's error?
Yes -- you are right -- if you said that the lead of the Right Bower was a
blunder of colossal magnitude! All South has to do after he wins the first
trick with the trump Queen is to lead either of his minor (Club or Diamond)
suit Aces. West must trump with the Ten, and is thoroughly end played! If he
leads the Left, South wins the Right, and will now take four tricks after
dropping the trump King under the Ace. If he leads the Spade King, South takes
the Ace, and the Right guarantees the bid. Finally, if he plays his last
Heart, South comfortably trumps with his Ace, and the Right will bring home
the bacon!
This hand drew a lot of analysis, as the crestfallen South
player realized his error. Here are the answers to the questions from the
Euchre Variations and Hand of the Month article.
-
What is
the best opening lead?
The King (or Ace) of Hearts is the strongest line, as it "punches" a trump
from the South hand. Any trump lead is useless, as South will win, and
exit with a minor suit Ace. West is forced to trump, and South takes the
rest -- regardless of the return.
-
Can west
win this hand?
He cannot win three tricks unless South makes a mistake. After South wins
the first Heart, he simply exits (as analyzed previously) with a side suit
Ace.
-
Can south
defeat west?
Absolutely! Proper play ensures success in all variations. These are the
hands which require a modicum amount of planning, and not the impulsive
play of high trump.

New Rules-Please
Read!
The following Rules can be found under 'Rules' on the league main page.
Recently Added Rules:
DO NOT 'GO ALONE' WITH 9 POINTS!
You
are allowed to 'Go Alone' on 8 points but you will be disqualified
if you go alone with 9! Sometimes it is necessary to go alone on 8
points so that your partner doesn't trump the first trick (you may
need the lead for 2nd trick!), thereby messing up your chance for 2
points and the win. It is disrespectful to the other team and your
partner to go alone with 9 points.
IF YOU GO ALONE WITH 9 PTS-If
you go alone on 9 points you will be automatically disqualified from
the tournament, even if it was a mistake.
If a member goes alone on 9 points, the Host must be called to the
table so they can witness the end result of the hand.
If a point is made, the partner gets credit for the win and is
declared the winner of the game. The partner that went alone will be
automatically be disqualified and his direct opponent will advance
as the 2nd winner of that game.
